Last week, Alan Chambers MBE joined over 2,000 guests at the renowned 2024 Earthshot Prize ceremony, held within an eco-dome in Cape Town, South Africa. Hosted by Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winner Billy Porter alongside acclaimed television presenter Bonang Matheba, attendees walked the “green carpet” in sustainable fashion, wearing outfits crafted from recycled materials or previously worn garments.
The awards were presented by HRH Prince William, who expressed his desire “to champion the dreamers, the thinkers, and the innovators from every walk of life, who share an ambition to build a better, more sustainable world.” Five ‘Earthshots’ or ambitious goals were awarded: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World, and Fix Our Climate.
Mission Spiritus extends heartfelt congratulations to the 15 Earthshot Finalists, with special recognition to the 2024 Winners:
- Protect and Restore Nature: Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative, Kazakstan
- Clean Our Air: Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), Ghana
- Revive Our Oceans: High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, Global
- Build a Waste-Free World: Keep IT Cool, Kenya
- Fix Our Climate: Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems, USA
While in Cape Town, Alan Chambers was invited to speak with participants of the Earthshot Youth Programme about Mission Spiritus – an ambitious initiative that includes seven major science-focused expeditions designed to collect micro and nanoplastic samples from some of the world’s most remote locations.
Alan addressed over 100 young people, emphasising that, in the coming years, the responsibility for our planet will increasingly fall to them – the engaged and vibrant youth of today. Every choice made now will shape the environmental legacy and opportunities available to their generation. This is why it’s essential for emerging leaders to be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to navigate the complex landscape of climate action.
Alan concluded by announcing an exciting opportunity: he is seeking a member of the Earthshot Youth Programme to join Mission Spiritus on the Northwest Passage expedition in late 2025 to collect soil samples.
We look forward to hearing from passionate volunteers eager to contribute to repairing and restoring our planet, creating a better future for all.
