The Expedition

Mission Spiritus – Patagonia is the fourth of seven science-led expeditions to collect environmental samples from remote global locations.
The expedition will start in El Chaltén, Argentina on 8 September 2026, move to and traverse the remote glaciers within the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, collecting snow and water samples on route and due to conclude by the 4 October 2026.
Expedition Route: The team will traverse over 200km of mountainous and glacial terrain on foot, operating in a remote and environmentally challenging region. The exact route will be determined in accordance with local expertise and guidance from the Walk Patagonia team.
Sample Collection: The team will use hand collection only, no mechanical digging. Samples will be moved in a sledge, similar to that in the photograph. Before being securely transported to Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, New York, USA for analysis.
Permissions: The National Parks Administration, in El Chaltén have provided permissions to collect snow, water and sediment samples during the expedition.
