Our team is gearing up for the next bold chapter: Mission Spiritus – Faroe Islands.
This will be the third in a series of seven science-driven expeditions across remote regions on each continent. Each mission is designed to push boundaries—both physically and scientifically—while contributing vital data to the global fight against plastic pollution.
In July 2025, led by Alan Chambers MBE, we plan to embark on a two-week expedition to visit all 18 islands of the Faroe archipelago, a rugged and breath-taking landscape where towering sea cliffs, volcanic mountains, and pristine fjords meet the wild Atlantic. From each island, we plan to collect water and sediment samples, expanding our growing database of micro and nano plastic pollution in some of the planet’s most remote and fragile ecosystems.
Scientific Collaboration for Impact
We are honoured to collaborate with Dr. Maureen Raymo and Dr. Beizhan Yan of Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, world leaders in climate and environmental research. Their pioneering work investigates the spread and impact of microplastics in regions previously thought to be untouched by human influence. By analysing the samples we collect, their team will provide crucial data on the infiltration of plastic particles into isolated ecosystems, evidence that is essential to influencing environmental policy and driving systemic change.
Local Partnerships and Support
Expeditions of this scale are only possible with the help of dedicated local partners. We are deeply grateful for the support of Jonbi Gudmundsson of True North (Film and Production Services), whose advice has been instrumental to developing a plan. We are also thankful to Sigga Jacobsen and Helena Davidsen from the Faroese Environment Agency, whose local expertise and guidance are invaluable in navigating the region’s challenging terrain and ensuring our mission meets environmental standards.
More Than Exploration – A Call for Change
At its core, Mission Spiritus is about far more than exploration, it’s about driving transformational change. The pristine, seemingly untouched regions we explore are not immune to the consequences of human activity. By uncovering the hidden spread of plastic pollutants, we aim to create a compelling body of scientific evidence that demands action.
But data alone is not enough. We believe in the power of storytelling and education to amplify the message. Through compelling visuals, expert insights, and real-world findings, we want to inspire individuals, organisations, and policymakers to rethink their relationship with plastic and advocate for meaningful solutions.
