MS Faroe Islands: Arrival and Preparation

Posted on 18 Jul, 2025

The Mission Spiritus team has arrived in the Faroe Islands to begin the third chapter in their global scientific expedition campaign. After landing at Vágar Airport, the team travelled east across the main island to reach Tórshavn, where they are now based for the duration of the 10-day mission. The journey from airport to capital offered a striking introduction to the raw beauty and steep terrain that will define the days ahead.

With operations established in Tórshavn, the team convened for a detailed planning meeting to finalise routes, equipment protocols and the sampling schedule. Weather and logistics play a significant role in this expedition, and multiple contingencies were mapped out to allow the team to collect data regardless of shifting conditions. Planning also included coordination with local authorities and a review of site access options by vehicle, boat and on foot.

Following the planning session, initial water and sediment samples were collected from locations around Streymoy. These early collections not only mark the official beginning of the scientific mission but also help ensure all systems and processes are in place before venturing further into the archipelago.

The next update will report on progress as the team travels into the more isolated regions of the Faroes to continue collecting environmental samples from across the island chain.
